This new home is set above a small public park, overlooking San Francisco Bay with the City skyline beyond. What started out as a speculative project for the Clients, in the end, became their family’s home when they decided to move in because they liked it so much. They are not the only ones who like it - the Clients tells us that when they look out their front windows they often see people taking pictures of their home!

Lacking street frontage, the narrow, uphill lot offered many development challenges. Negotiations with neighbors resulted in access being provided via a shared driveway at the rear of the lot, as well as a unique pedestrian entry pathway through the small public park at the front. The park also acts as a buffer, providing an additional setback from the busy shoreline street on which the home fronts.

The compact design provides 2,725 sq.ft. of living space, including 3 Bedrooms, 4-1/2 Baths, a combined Family Room, Kitchen & Breakfast Area, plus a large Recreation Room on the first level. A 270 sq.ft. detached Study at the back of the rear garden also doubles as a Guest Suite. Sweeping views of the Bay and San Francisco are enjoyed from all three levels of the home, where the rooms on each level open onto outdoor terraces or decks.

The grey stained dipped wood shingles and white painted wood trim detailing on the exterior is reminiscent of older homes found on the eastern seaboard. The building’s traditional styling and massing blend well with the existing streetscape. A similar traditional treatment and attention to detail was carried throughout the interior of the house as well. Warm wall colors set off by white painted trim and stained hardwood floors present a comfortable interior environment accented by the owners’ playful collection of furniture, found objects and art.
